Would Cristiano Ronaldo Be Remembered As A Legend At Manchester United?
Now that the unnecessary long and much dragged transfer saga of Cristiano Ronaldo is over with Alex Ferguson laughing his way to the bank to cash the unprecedented and unheard of- 80 million pounds transfer fee and Ronaldo getting annotated CR9 from the revered CR7.The question that now looms in some minds back in Manchester is – Did CR7 carve his name among the legends of Old Trafford?
Ronaldo started his career at Manchester United as an 18 year old after his move from Sporting Lisbon (for 12.24 million pounds). On his arrival he asked for the ’28’ number in which he previously played but Ferguson in order to motivate and beckon him gave ronaldo the number ‘7’ shirts worn previously by George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham. Ronaldo started slow and managed only 6 goals in 40 appearances for the club in 2003-2004 season. With time Ronaldo got better and by 2007-2008 season he reached his peak finishing the campaign with career high 42 goals in all competitions in 49 appearances.
Manchester United went on to win the English Premier League, the Champions League , the Community Shield . Ronaldo had his hands full with awards such as Barclays Golden Boot,European Golden Shoe and the FIFA Pro World Player of the Year. In the 2008-2009 campaign Ronaldo could only manage to join the team in September having an ankle operated. By the time the season got over Ronaldo scored a respectable 26 goals in 53 appearance.Manchester United went on to win the FIFA world club cup and the English Premier League consecutively thrice but lost in the final of Champions League to much worthy rivals, Barcelona. Ronaldo won the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player of the Year awards.
On observing the statistics one can decifer that CR’s performance and Manchester United fortunes were twined together and his presence did make a big differnce in Manchester United’s attacking options. But is Ronaldo a legend of Old Trafford- I believe that Manchester United’s performance in the 2009-2010 season will let us know. Irrespective of what happens and inspite of all his attitute and eccentricities , he will be remembered as a winker who made a difference at Manchester United.
